Administer tranexamic acid systemically and/or intra-articularly

Tranexamic acid used systemically and/or intra-articularly is associated with reduced blood loss and reduced risk of blood transfusion. Hip and knee replacement surgeries are traditionally associated with significant blood loss and risk of blood transfusion. Tranexamic acid prevents breakdown of fibrin clots through inhibition of plasminogen activation, plasmin activation, and tissue plasminogen activator. Benefits of tranexamic acid seem to outweigh risk of venous thrombosis.
