Maintain euvolemia with judicious use of intraoperative IV fluids

Recent reduction in preoperative and postoperative NPO durations has improved patient nutrition and fluid status intraoperatively and has promoted early return of normal gastrointestinal function. Intraoperative IV fluid goals should include replacement of insensible losses, maintenance of normal fluid volumes for each fluid compartment in the body, maintenance of normal electrolyte concentrations, and promotion of normal renal function.
