Administer modern general anesthesia or neuraxial anesthesia

Anesthetic technique should include either neuraxial anesthesia or modern general anesthesia. Neuraxial techniques are associated with fewer postoperative complications relative to traditional general anesthesia techniques, including fewer cardiopulmonary and thromboembolic problems. However, modern general anesthetic techniques, including multimodal pain management and opioid-sparing techniques, show no clinically relevant difference in outcomes when compared with neuraxial techniques. Epidurals and intrathecal opioids are not recommended for hip or knee replacement surgery.
